For 1,123 years, Constantinople was the center of the Christian world. Not Rome. Its walls held for a millennium, and every army that came against them failed. Until May 29, 1453, when Sultan Mehmed's cannons breached them at last. Emperor Constantine XI removed his imperial regalia, drew his sword, and charged into the breach. His body was never found. The city fell. The shield remained.
The dial is drawn from the imperial heraldry of the late Byzantine period: the cross at the center, four betas in the quadrants, Βασιλεύς Βασιλέων, Βασιλεύων Βασιλευόντων, "King of Kings, ruling over those who rule." For a thousand years this shield stood for the city that guarded the Christian East.
The city fell, but the symbol did not. It passed north to Moscow, into the heraldry of every Christian throne that claimed to continue what was lost. To wear it is to take up that continuity yourself, to be one of the places the symbol survives now. A thousand years of holding the line.

For 1,123 years, Constantinople was the center of the Christian world. Not Rome. Constantinople. The largest city in Christendom, the richest in Europe, the most fortified on earth. Its walls held for a millennium. This was only possible after the battle of the Milvian Bridge that was led by the symbol of Christ, the Chi Rho.
The symbol
It all started at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge on October 28, 312 AD. Before the battle, Constantine saw a vision of the first two Greek letters of "Christ", forming the Chi Rho sign in the sky with the words "In this sign, you will conquer" (Latin: In Hoc Signo Vinces). This led him to place it on his warriors' shields to deem victorious.
