Baldwin IV was crowned King of Jerusalem at thirteen. By then, the leprosy was already spreading. His body was failing before he ever sat the throne. Every adviser expected a regency, a puppet, a boy who would step aside. He did not step aside.

November 25, 1177. Saladin marched 26,000 men toward Jerusalem. Baldwin rode out with 375 knights. Sixteen years old, bandaged, barely able to grip the reins. He charged directly into the center of the army. Saladin's forces broke. The impossible victory belonged to a boy the world had already written off.
